Reclaiming the Body: Healing Through Awareness & Somatic Care

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM)—a time to honor survivors, deepen understanding, and create space for healing that is compassionate, embodied, and empowering.

At She Heals Journey PLLC, we recognize that healing from sexual trauma is not just cognitive—it is deeply somatic, relational, and spiritual. Healing is not about “getting over it.” It is about coming back home to your body, safely and on your own terms.

Understanding Sexual Trauma & the Body

Sexual trauma can leave imprints not only in memory, but in the nervous system. You may notice:

  • Feeling disconnected or numb in your body
  • Hypervigilance or anxiety
  • Difficulty with trust, intimacy, or pleasure
  • A sense of shame or disembodiment

These responses are not flaws—they are adaptive survival responses.

At She Heals Journey PLLC, we believe in a holistic approach that integrates mind, body, and spirit, offering somatic therapy, mindfulness, and culturally affirming care to support true healing.

What is Somatic Healing?

Somatic healing invites you to listen to your body instead of overriding it.

Rather than asking, “What’s wrong with me?”
We gently ask, “What is my body trying to communicate?”

This approach allows survivors to:

  • Restore a sense of safety within
  • Rebuild trust with their body
  • Release stored tension and trauma
  • Reclaim pleasure, agency, and voice

3 Gentle Somatic Practices for Self-Care

These practices are meant to be invitations, not expectations. Move at your own pace.

1. Grounding Through the Senses

Sit comfortably and name:

  • 5 things you see
  • 4 things you feel
  • 3 things you hear
  • 2 things you smell
  • 1 thing you taste

This helps anchor your nervous system in the present moment.

2. Hand-to-Heart + Breath

Place one hand on your chest and one on your belly.
Breathe slowly and say (internally or aloud):
“I am here. I am safe enough in this moment.”

Let your body soften where it can.

3. Micro-Movements & Release

Gently sway, stretch, or shake out your hands.
Notice where tension lives—allow small, intuitive movement to release it.

Healing doesn’t have to be dramatic. Sometimes it’s subtle, quiet, and powerful.

Journal Prompt for Reflection

Take your time with this. You don’t have to answer everything at once.

What does safety feel like in my body—and what helps me return to that feeling?”

Optional follow-ups:

  • Where do I feel tension or ease right now?
  • What does my body need from me today?
  • What would it look like to trust my body again, even a little?

You Are Allowed to Heal Differently

Healing is not linear. It is layered. It is personal.

You are allowed to:

  • Move slowly
  • Set boundaries
  • Feel pleasure again
  • Take up space in your healing

At She Heals Journey PLLC, we hold space for women—especially women of color—to heal from sexual trauma, release shame, and reclaim their power through integrative and somatic practices.
